Envisioning the Future of Brain Science in Japan: Let's Shape Our Ideal Research Environment Together

Abstract:
In recent years, Japan's scientific research capabilities have shown noticeable declines, raising concerns domestically and internationally. Brain science is no exception; amid intensifying global competition, we face challenges such as the shortage of stable research positions, difficulty in securing funding, and insufficient support and collaboration systems. To overcome these hurdles and advance Japan's brain science, we must build an environment where researchers can fully immerse themselves in creative and innovative work without anxiety or distraction.

This symposium invites all participants to openly discuss what an ideal research environment for future brain science might look like. As reference points for our discussion, we have two inspiring "Grand Visions" already accepted into the "Master Plan for Future Academic Promotion" by the Science Council of Japan:

  • Our society's proposal for "Creating a 'Brain Observatory' for Unraveling the Brain Universe"
  • The concept by the Union of Brain Science Associations in Japan of a "Harmonious Society," aiming for coexistence of diverse brains, minds, and environments through integrated insights from multilayered brain research and personalized medical systems.

Imagining that these visionary plans become reality, we encourage open discussion on fostering collaborative researcher networks, career paths for upcoming scientists, and strategies for effective research funding allocation. Furthermore, considering implementation through the framework of "MEXT Roadmap," let's collectively identify realistic and actionable ideas that concretely define the research environment we aspire to create.

Lunch will be provided for a comfortable and enjoyable session, allowing us to engage openly in discussion. Together, let's outline a vibrant future for brain science research in Japan.

We eagerly look forward to your participation and valuable contributions!

Language: The discussion will be conducted in Japanese.
